This Calcium is the largest found mineral in our body and the bones are their starting point. The bones are the storage tanks of Calcium and the body draws Calcium from the bones.

Another means of Calcium to the body is through our diet. When our diet is not Calcium rich then the body starts to extract more Calcium from the bones which makes the bones weaker. Vitamin D is necessary to help the body absorb and use calcium.

There are many reasons like genetics, body weight and physical activity that are responsible for our high blood pressure. A low level of Calcium is also a reason for high blood pressure. A diet rich in low-fat dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables help our body to meet the daily calcium requirement.

But nowadays youngsters and even elders do not take the recommended amount of five servings of fruits and vegetables. Nearly 40% of women suffer from premenstrual syndrome like, pain, food craving, bloating and mood swings. Calcium deficiency is largely responsible for this premenstrual syndrome.

Vitamin D is produced when our skin is exposed to the sun but many young women avoid going out in the sun. So their Vitamin D level is low and naturally the Calcium in the body is not absorbed properly which leads to all these syndromes. So let us be careful about this Star Nutrient and be healthy.

Losing a few kilos

We all are aware of the health problems associated with obesity. But we are not worried about it till somebody from our family develops a heart problem or diabetes. Then we begin our sessions to lose those extra kilos. Just start by losing 5 kilos this gives us a control over our weight our looks and our health. Even though we may not become thin by losing that 5 kilo it helps in delaying the onset of diseases.

High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the reasons for all the health problems like heart attack, stroke etc. When we lose that 5 kilo our blood pressure is lowered by four points. Weight loss is proved to be an effective way to manage high blood pressure.

By losing those extra kilos we are able to decrease the amount of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol that clogs the arteries and increase the high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol that cleans our cardiovascular system. A 5 kilo weight loss lowers LDL cholesterol by 20 points.

How will we feel if we are to carry a five kilo grocery bag throughout the day? Sure, we will feel tired by the end of the day; it is the same with those extra kilos we are carrying. When we start losing weight our image gets better and we walk and act with more confidence.

Being over weight shows its effects on the weight- bearing joints like the hip and knees. This leads to arthritis and losing a few kilos lowers the chances of developing arthritis.

Excess weight in our abdomen forces our lungs to work harder while we sleep and the fatty tissue in the throat area decreases the size of our airway when we are lying down. The breathing difficulty leads to snoring and this can be cured by losing a little weight.

Our blood sugar level also comes down when we start losing weight. Most of us are not bothered about our extra weight but once we start losing a little weight it will give us the confidence to lose more weight and this will improve our health.

Keeping stress at bay

Stress makes us anxious and depressed, it does not allow us to think clearly and left unattended becomes a danger to our health. Women become more stressed out than men. It is better to give ourselves some time, daily. As we brush our teeth morning and night for our oral health we must do some meditation for our mental health. When feeling stressed try breathing like a baby, take easy, gentle breaths and allow your belly to rise and fall with each breath.

Life is precious, be nice to somebody who needs a small help and this makes our day happier. As we start to accept things as they are and not as we want them to be, the happier we will be. Always feel positive try to weed out the negative feelings. Being quiet for five to ten minutes is very essential, being quiet allows answers to surface.

Getting ourselves involved in a hobby or work that we love to do help to keep the daily stress at bay. We can recover from stressful situations by eliminating it, modifying it or under reacting to it. Reading something spiritual gives us faith to face major challenges.

Natural energy boosters

Sometimes, even after a good night’s sleep, a well balanced diet and regular exercise we may feel tired and less energetic. A check-up might show nothing wrong and still we feel tired and groggy. Here are a few techniques to make us energetic:

10-15 minutes of deep breathing helps to slow the heart rate, relieves nervous tension, lowers blood pressure and reduces stress hormones. Whenever you feel stressed, deep breathe (fill both your chest and abdomen with air and release it slowly) for 10-15 minutes.

Meditation helps us to relax, find a quiet place, sit, close your eyes and focus your mind in one point. This helps us to fight fatigue.

Let us begin our day with small, easy stretches that has the same effect as deep breathing. It relieves muscle tension and helps in blood circulation and sends more oxygen to the brain.

Try to eat small, frequent meals, when we eat blood starts to flow towards the intestinal tract. Our brain gets little blood circulation and so we feel sloppy. To avoid this take small, frequent meals that helps to maintain blood sugar levels throughout the day. Avoid saturated fat, meat, ice cream and heavy sauces as it takes longer to digest and diverts blood from the brain for a long time.

We must stand straight, because when we slouch we shift our weight away from the center of our body and this forces us to expend more energy to maintain our balance.

8 hours of sleep is not standard for everyone, some people need more sleep while some people need lesser sleep. So try to find out your requirement and sleep accordingly. This will help us to stay alert and sharper throughout the day.

More from around the world

There are many different cultures in different countries and each one has its way to help reduce weight.

Russians grow their own vegetables and fruits at their country houses. They preserve and can the vegetables and fruits and use them in their diet. This makes their diet more nutritious.

The French are known for their leisurely family meal. 92% of the French families dine together every night. Having a long meal and talking makes them eat less.

Turmeric is a key ingredient in the curies made by Malaysians. Turmeric has a component called curcumin, which helps to fight fat. This ingredient suppresses the growth of fat tissues and increases fat burning.

Rooibos tea is drunk by all South Africans. As this tea is naturally sweet there is no need to add sugar. Drinking rooibos instead of our normal coffee or tea will help us save thousands of calories every month.

Hungarians pickle cucumbers, bell peppers, cabbage and tomatoes. The vinegar in which these vegetables are soaked contain a large amount of acetic acid. Acetic acid helps to reduce blood pressure, blood sugar and fat formation.

From the toddlers to the grand parents a Norwegian family goes on hiking or skiing every Sunday. This is in their blood and a family tour helps to burn calories.

Most of the Japanese take a 20-30 minute nap daily. Sleep deprivation raises the risk of weight gain. We mistake that we are hungry when we are actually sleepy. So a nap instead of a snack helps to put off weight gain.

The Mexicans have their bigger meal in the mid day. Breakfast and lunch should be heavier and the dinner should be lighter. This helps in weight control.

Yoga is a great stress buster and it also helps in weight reduction. Yoga is done on an empty stomach and can build muscles which boost our metabolism. It encourages mindfulness and this gives us satisfaction in what less food we eat.

The power of forgiving

Scientific researches have proved that hatred, anger, resentment and grudges are emotions that destroy our mental health and develop physical ailments. Blood pressure, heart disease and stomach ailments are caused due to stress, unhappiness and anger. Forgiveness helps to develop relations, increases satisfaction and reduces crime.

We misunderstand forgiveness as weakness but it is just the opposite. Forgiveness shows our strength, courage and compassion. Forgiving does not mean that we are supporting the wrong doer and continue our relation with him, but it is to let go and stop dwelling on revenge and harboring hatred. Forgiveness is to find peace within that cannot be stopped or compelled. By holding on to hatred we carry negative energy which later turns into bitterness and anger.

Anger makes us unhealthy and leads to complications so free the mind from its emotions and try to create more space in our hearts for vibrancy and joy. A happy mind is a happy body and a happy body is a healthy body.

People from around the World

People of all culture and region are worried about their weight. Each culture has its own customs that help to keep the people lean. For example when we are dining out in India or in Europe, the waiter generally places a glass of water on our table. But in a restaurant in the U.S. we have to order our water so many of us opt to order a cola or other beverages that might add to our calories.

Thai food is very spicy and this makes us to eat slowly. When we eat too fast, by the time our brain signals that our stomach is full, we have over eaten. Eating slowly helps us to eat less as we get the signal from the brain that we are full and we can stop eating.

The Brazilians stay slim by enjoying the traditional dish of rice and beans during all their meals. They are lower in fat and higher in fibre which stabilizes blood sugar level.

The Poles spend only 5% of their income on eating out whereas an average American spends 37% of their income on eating out. Eating out makes us to eat unhealthy food and puts on us those extra pounds.

75% of Germans have a breakfast of fruits, whole grain cereals and bread. Skipping breakfast makes us to keep snacking at work and this leads to weight gain.

Dutch use their bicycles for their errands, going to office and for other daily activities. This helps them burn 550 calories per hour.

The Swiss eat muesli for breakfast, it is a porridge made from oats, fruits and nuts. This is better for our health and weight control. Muesli’s fibre is slow to digest, making us feel full for longer.

Healing Power of Love

It is am amazing factor that when a patient feels loved things happen in their physiology that encourage healing. So, the doctors advice their patients to share their feelings with somebody. Love and intimacy are at the root of health and illness.

Simple things like talking to your friends, sharing your thoughts openly or feeling close to your parents make a powerful difference in your health. A research showed that, patients who were undergoing coronary angiography, those who felt most loved and supported had fewer blockages in their arteries of their hearts.

Similarly, in a research in Israel, it was found that men who had high levels of anxiety were likely to develop angina in the next five years but those who confirmed their wife’s love were less likely to develop angina. Here the wife’s love and support is an important balancing factor.

Men and women who were the most isolated had four times the risk of dying prematurely. Love and intimacy lead to greater health and healing, while loneliness and isolation lead to disease and premature death.

Recovery of the patient depends on the knowledge that others care for you, that you matter to other people. This feeling strengthens a deep impulse towards life-a will to live. To have an open heart is vitally important to having a long and healthy life.

Building strong bones

When we are young our bones grow in size and density till we reach our full growth. Even as we grow the bone tissues are broken down and rebuilt. As we age the growth rate of the bone tissue is slower than the rate at which it is broken and rebuilt. So, naturally our bones start to lose density and become brittle leading to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is found in women more than in men. The reason for this is the hormone oestrogen which plays a main role in using our dietary calcium to build new bones. As women reaches menopause the reduction in oestrogen secretion deprives her bones of vital calcium. Men are also not spared, a reduction in testosterone, which happens naturally after the age of 60, reduces the use of dietary calcium and this leads to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is not a disease of the old it is found even in younger people. A sedentary life style, excessive smoking and drinking, low levels of body fat which hinders oestrogen secretion in athletes are the reasons for osteoporosis in the younger generation.

Taking food rich in calcium like soyabeans, broccoli, turnip greens, sardines, clams, shrimp and dairy products like milk, cheese, paneer and curd. Regular exercise helps to develop bones, inactivity causes bone loss. Walking and weight bearing exercises are a must throughout our life.

Tattoos

Kids who want to look stylish get tattooed or get pierced. When their parents refuse them permission they try to get it done without their knowledge. This is very dangerous as many kids who get pierced get infected.

The piercing guns are made of materials that cannot be sterilized completely. This causes infection and sometimes adverse effects like damage to an important nerve or transmission of virus.

Tattoos were once associated with social outcasts or convicts. They were made famous by film stars and celebrities. The teens show their independence and rebelliousness through these tattoos and piercing.

Proper hygiene, use of sterile and quality materials, the right technique and adequate care during scarring process can help to avoid health complications. Select a place that is enclosed, follows hygienic practices and has a health permit. The person who does the piercing should use latex gloves, surgical mask, new needles and sterilized materials. Do not get pierced with a gun get it done with materials made of surgical steel or titanium.

A tattoo can be an indelible mark on the skin that a person valued highly at certain point in his or her life but at another stage he or she may reject it or consider it a disadvantage.

Dry Skin

Winter means dry skin, cold weather and low humidity make dry skin worse in the winter. After having your bath, pat your skin dry and apply moisturizer lotion immediately to retain the moisture in the skin. Apply the lotion before going to sleep.

Avoid bathing in very hot water, use moisturizing liquid cleansers instead of soaps, as soaps tend to dry the skin. To add moisture to the air in your bedroom use a humidifier. If the skin becomes itchy and looks worse inside your elbows, the back of your neck or knees, or your cheek or hands, it might be eczema. To control the rash better consult your dermatologist.

Diet plays a role to cure the dry skin. Take a lot of liquids for a healthy skin, women should take two litres of fluids per day, while men should take three litres of fluids. Control caffeine and alcohol intake as both are diuretics. Good fats like olive oil, nuts, seeds and fish are good for a healthy skin so add them to your daily diet.

Healing power of Germs

Research shows that exposure to certain germs keeps people healthy. Children who attended day care during their first three years are exposed to more germs than children who stay at home. These children who stayed at home had as many colds when they started school.

Solitary children developed asthma more than children who attended day care or children who grew up with siblings. Exposure to germs seems to protect the children against asthma.

Intestinal parasites protect us from various infections. Developed countries have eliminated pin worms found in the intestine. The elimination of these germs have given way to inflammation bowel disease, which causes diarrhea.

The body’s defences develop normally when they have invaders to respond to. Lacking them, the immune system turns against healthy tissue, causing allergies and conditions like inflammation bowel disease.

Exposure to germs at an early stage results in increased levels of the hormones that help keep the immune system in balance. It is not that we should not be hygienic but it is expected that one day probiotics, the helpful bacteria, may take their place beside antibiotics.

Eat Smart

Here is a list of fruits that have medicinal properties; many of these foods share the same properties but they must be combined to reap the benefits. Whole grains are natural sources of proteins and carbohydrates. The bran and the germ are the main source of Vitamin E, B, zinc, manganese, magnesium, selenium, copper and iron. When the whole grains are milled the bran and the germ leaving only the starchy endosperm. So it is better to eat whole grains than the flour.

Common whole grains are wheat, barley, oats, maize, brown rice, spelt, faro, emmer, einkorn, rye, kamut, millet, amaranth, quino, buck wheat and sprouted grains. All whole grains have some insoluble fiber (which is good for the digestive tract) and some soluble fiber (which helps promote healthy cholesterol level).

Whole grains also have phytochemicals like rutin that helps reduce the risk of heart disease. It was previously thought that the fiber in the whole grains helped reduce diseases but the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and complex carbohydrates have an important role in helping to fight against diseases. A whole grain diet reduces risk of colon cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary heart diseases. They provide nutrients for proper health maintenance.

Help your child

We all put our children in school to learn to read, write and calculate. But we all fail to teach them social skills. Some children are good in interaction but a few lack this skill but it can be improved. For adults poor social skills are a greater disadvantage than poor spelling.

Saying hello, please and thank you are the basic social skills expected from everyone. Children should be taught to answer politely and not to answer in mono-syllables. They must greet every visitor including the repairman and the sales person. While they speak they should look into the person’s eyes.

People are judged on their handshake so show your child how long and how firmly to shake a hand. Many children are shy and they should not be nagged or forced to perform in high pressure situations. They should not be exposed to potentially embarrassing situations without warning.

Answering for your child is not the way out, a graduated exposure will help them overcome their shyness. By proceeding in small, safe increments, the parent can help the child to speak to strangers.

Internet is dreams come true for the shy kid as there is no risk of rejection. But this will delay the acquisition of true social confidence. Limit the child to an hour of computer and send him out to play with the neighbor’s children which will help them in group play.

Dinner table is the best place for the child to practice conversation. Make the child talk about the school or his friend or anything to keep him talking. Put the child with others who share his interest. Do not expect the introvert child to be the life of the party, just two or three close friends are fine for them.

30 minute Fitness Plan

Exercise is the keyword to prevent stroke, heart disease and some types of cancer. There is no need to go to a gym and sweat for an hour. 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity done on most of the days of a week is enough. The advances in technology like automatic doors, lift and e-commerce contribute to obesity and its related diseases.

Experts recommend that by burning ten extra calories a day we can lose half a kilo in a year. If we burn 150 calories a day, which can be acquired by a 30 minute walk, we can lose 5 kilos in a year. If we can also eat 150 calories less a day we can lose another 5 kilos in a year.

Expanding waist lines, junk food diet and inactivity lead to diabetes. With proper diet and regular activity diabetes can be controlled. In diabetics the blood glucose level is not properly maintained by the hormone, insulin. When we exercise, the body fuels the activity by taking glucose out of our blood to use it for energy.

Exercise combined with a good diet can reduce blood pressure; raise the level of good, HDL, cholesterol and lower the level of bad, LDL, cholesterol. This helps in improving our heart health.

Research shows that physical activity exerts a “feel good” effect that can work as a powerful treatment for depression.

For those of us suffering from arthritis, exercise can reduce pain by keeping the joints flexible and the muscle around the joints strong.

Experts found that the least fit men and women’s cancer death rate was more than fit men and women.

So choose to move. Stop thinking of exercise as a workout, think of it as a way to free our body from the confines of its workaday routine.

Bad Backs

Back pains are caused by a strained muscle or ligament, or a herniated spinal disc. We strain our back over the years and one event proves to be the last straw. We can do a lot to maintain a healthy back.

When we are carrying heavy bags it is recommended to hold the bags close to our body so that the weight is evenly distributed in both the hands. When lifting a heavy package off the ground bend from your knees to pick it up and hold it against your body with both hands. While using a shoulder bag see to it that the weight is evenly distributed between the shoulders and the back.

The chair we use to sit should be curved so that we should feel the bottom of its back against our pelvis. We should be able to put our feet flat on the floor. We will feel fine only when our spine is straight.

While traveling on a rough road it is better to slow down as speed magnifies the effects of bumps. When we are on a long drive we should stop every hour to stretch.

A cheap form of back therapy is a hard bed with a firm mattress. We should change the mattress when it starts losing firmness. Lying on our back or on our side is good, lying on our stomach causes our back to bend, creating pressure on our lower spine.

Being over weight also causes back pain. When starting to exercise start slowly with gentle exercises. As severe exercises cause back pain. Many back pains caused by muscle strain heal within four to six weeks. If pain worsens it is better to see a doctor.

Knee Pain

Many people suffer from arthritis and this arthritis causes stiffness and pain at the joints. Shedding the excess weight and keeping ourselves active are some of the remedies for arthritis. Severe cases are treated with steroid injections and even surgery. Researchers have found that arthritis can be controlled with our diet.

Taking soya protein everyday helps in reducing knee pain and lowers the use of pain killers. Soya is rich in isoflavones, a plant hormone that has anti-inflammatory properties. Flavored soya milk, edamame (baby soya beans) and soya chunks can be added to our daily diet.

Eating plenty of fruits that are packed with Vitamin C, like orange, papaya, kiwi, grapefruit and mango, reduces the risk of developing bone marrow lesions. Researchers say that the Vitamin C protects the knee joint and supporting structures.

Fish and fish oil can ease joint pains and stiffness. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish helps to block the chemicals that cause inflammation and also blocks the proteins that wear down knee cartilage. Eating two servings of oily fish ( mackerel or salmon) per week or one gram of omega -3s capsule every day is recommended.

Best kind of Skin Care

We all believe that healthy eating is the best kind of skin care. It is true, as we can see the Asian women who have very fine skin have been on a soya products diet from their early age. A litre of green tea a day helps the skin to be less sensitive to light. But experts feel that the best way to treat a skin is from the outside. Using skin creams is good for the skin and gives us a positive feeling.

When the skin gets older or when it is regularly exposed to cigarette smoke or the sun, enzymes called collagenases are formed and these collagenases attack the collagen that stops skin from sagging. Vitamin C, when applied for a certain period stops the production of collagenases and so collagen is favored.

Free radicals make the skin age faster, Vitamin E is an antioxidant that curbs the free radicals. Skin creams with these Vitamins help to stabilize the skin barrier. The skin is exposed to a lot of stress from the sun, cigarette smoke and environmental pollutants. If the skin barrier is in tact we are less prone to infections that get through the skin.

Health is not just the absence of diseases it refers to a state of physical, mental and social well being. Physical appearance also plays a role, smooth, radiant skin is a beauty factor and so skin care plays a role in staying healthy. Using a skin cream can give us positive feelings we feel we are doing ourselves something good. This feeling makes our skin more radiant.

Keeping abreast

For a woman, breasts are the most cherished part of her femininity, sexuality and self esteem.
